Small Towns

Stole this from Adored’s Diary but had to since I related to some it during my childhood, now things have changed here, but my city was smaller when I was a kid… now its grown sooo much!

Subject: Little Towns
Those who grew up in small towns will laugh when they read this.

Those who didn’t will be in disbelief.

You can name everyone you graduated with

You know what 4-H means.

You went to parties at a pasture, barn, gravel pit, or in the middle of a dirt road. (no I didn’t party so I cant say yes to this one haha)

You were friends with the kids that had everything in common with you and also the ones who had nothing, because you went to school from pre-school through high school with them.

You used to “drag” Main.- (I didn’t do this but my siblings all did on our blvd, by the time I was a teen they made it illegal to cruise our MAIN and had signs up forbidding it.)

You said the “F” word and your parents knew within the hour. – (LOL I never said the F word, was too scared)

If you did anything remotely unacceptable, your parents heard it from every person that cared anything about your
family and others who didn’t care for your family. (Yep, has a few lectures or other moms at my door before as a kid about unacceptable behavior)

If you did anything considered wonderful, your parents heard it from every person that cared anything about your
family and they didn’t hear a word from the others who didn’t care for your family.

You walked through the front door of the local business and out the back door, to keep from walking around the block

It was cool to date somebody from the neighboring town.

The whole school went to the same party after graduation or prom

You didn’t give directions by street names but rather by references. Turn by Nelson’s house, go 2 blocks to Anderson’s, and it’s four houses left of the track field.- (LOL I still do this and drive people nuts cause I never learned street names around here, I always gave directions according to sites and businesses).

You couldn’t help but date a friend’s ex-boyfriend/girlfriend, or your brother/sister’s ex.

Your car stayed filthy because of the dirt roads, and you will never own a dark vehicle for this reason. (Well I do have roads lol, but when I dated my ex he lived off a dirt road, man the sound of my car rattling and the rocks flying, I did that for several years, hard on a car, rattles all the screws loose)

The town next to you was considered “trashy” or “snooty” but was actually just like your town. (LOL the town next to me is ghetto to this day, I still don’t like it)

You referred to anyone with a house newer than 1960 as the “rich people”

The people in the “big city” dressed funny, and then you picked up the trend 2 years later.

Anyone you wanted could be found at the local gas station or the bar. (Here it was the Yearly Fair, you saw EVERYONE there, reunions galore)

You saw at least one friend a week driving a tractor through town or one of your friends driving a grain truck to school (LOL no tractors)

The gym teacher suggested you haul hay for the summer to get stronger (ummm no)

Directions were given using THE stop sign or the stop light, if you had one

When you decided to walk somewhere for exercise, 5 people would pull over and ask if you wanted a ride.

Your teachers called you by your older siblings’ names; (no mine are like 10 yrs or more older then me)

Your teachers remembered when they taught your parents. (no but my Dads mom taught my mom and that’s how my parents met, her in law was her teacher)

You could charge at any local store or write checks without any ID..

The closest McDonalds was an hour away. ( We did have McDonalds)

The closest mall was over an hour away. (Very true, No Malls and Toys R Us was over an hour away)

It was normal to see an old man riding through town on a riding lawn mower. (nope)

You’ve pee’d in a cornfield; (Where I live its deserts, yep peed in plenty of them as we played in them all the time)

You laughed out loud reading this because you know it is true.

I think what I remember the most about childhood in this town was the freedom as a kid to go anywhere. Our parents didn’t fear where we went, we walked to the local store, to the movie theatres, we took short cuts through chain link fences and drainage ditches. My parents dropped me off and left me at the movies with my girlfriend and picked us up later, I rode my all over the area. I wont let my kids now go around the corner of my street without my permission or being with them. We spent hours in the local desert building forts out of plywood and things we could find.

OH and it is funny…

My friend C, we lived ont he same block, 5 houses apart, hes in my baby book as one of my first friends around age 3, We went to the same schools all the way till graduation, we still live in the same city, hes actually living inhis childhood home now with his wife and 3 kids, and both of OUR kids are going to the Very grade school we attended, and last year my oldest had a teacher for 5th grade that I had when I went there in 4th grade!

OH! And my parents Dr.? Hes the original Dr they have had since they came here in the 60s, he delivered me, he was my dr and then saw both my boys and did their circumcisions,,, the man is still practicing as a Dr and hes in his late 70s!
